Ooo… Shiney New Apples

Sep 12, 2006

Looks like I wasn’t too far off when I tried to predict what new wonderful gadgets Apple would have us buy this Christmas. The most interesting bit was when they previewed their set-top box, code-named iTV. This seems to be a step down from a full-fledged computer, but also a step up from just a “simple” streaming device (like the Airport Express).

They also rev’d up all their iPods, upgraded iTunes, and introduced the iTunes Movie Store. Here’s what went down:

  • New iPod (6G) — brighter screens, bigger capacity
  • iPod nano (2G) — suspiciously like the old iPod minis, in various colours
  • iPod shuffle — wow, it’s tiny. Clip-on design.
  • iTunes 7 — with the iTunes Movie Store (Disney content only at launch)
  • iTV — wireless streaming media device, to ship in early 2007

The iPod shuffle is really more like an iPod nano… you can watch the whole event at Apple’s website.

Exciting times to be an Apple fan. The iTV device in particular seems interesting — essentially a way to get your iTunes content onto your TV wirelessly without needing a full Mac mini connected to it.
