About Joe

about this site (and Joe)

tantannoodles.com is the personal blog of Joe Tan (that’s me). I’m a Vancouver native, but I recently moved to Washington DC to work for Silas Partners. At Silas Partners, I do a lot of web development type work for different churches and ministry organizations, so you’ll see a few posts here and there about the stuff I’ve done. When I’m not at work, I like to fiddle with my guitar, ride my bike, or challenge people to a game of Halo 2. I also help with the worship ministry at the church I’m attending here in Washington DC.

what’s tan tan noodles?

tan tan noodles Well, growing up in Vancouver, I used to always go out to eat after church with my parents and friends for lunch. We’d usually go to the same set of chinese restaurants and usually order the same set of dishes every Sunday. One of the regular dishes we’d order was “dan dan mien”, which would get translated into English as “tan tan noodles”. It’s best described as a noodle soup dish with a kind of spicy peanuty sauce. Very yummy. So combine my last name with a favorite noodle dish and that’s the story of how tantannoodles.com came to be.

geeky stuff

This site is run on WordPress, which is a light, fast, free, and open source PHP-based content management system. I’ve tried to design the site to with web standards in mind, so every page should validate (in theory at least). The actual design of the site is something I came up with (and then later tweaked) over a couple days of tinkering with Photoshop, which I then converted into WordPress templates. And as you can see, all I can really do with Photoshop at the moment is create drop shadows (and gradient fade-outs). You can subscribe to this site if you have an RSS reader, and if you’re cool that’s what you do.

I’m also hoping to release all the tweaks I’ve done to this site as open source, and when I do, you’ll find it here.
