G4, Meet Core 2 Duo

G4, meet Intel Woot, I just got my new 15″ Macbook Pro, 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I havn’t really used it too extensively just yet, but my first impressions: the screen is so much nicer than my 12″ G4 Powerbook. Comparing them side by side, the Macbook Pro’s screen is definitely at least 50% brighter than the G4’s, not to mention it has all those extra widescreen pixels. Now I can get back on track with some of my other side projects. Not that I needed a new 15″ Macbook Pro to do that, but well… it makes it much nicer :)

I also went down to the Apple store today to check out the brand new iPhone, and yup… it looks really nice. Using your finger to flick and scroll is so cool and intuitive. I don’t think it’s going to be something I’m going to buy right now, but maybe down the road in a couple years. Which brings me to another thing. The whole cell phone industry here in the States is something I think is really broken, the whole industry just reeks of corporate greed. I mean, would you buy a TV set that was locked in such a way that you could only receive channels from one cable provider?  It’s been said that Verizon actually passed up on the iPhone, because Apple wouldn’t give them any control over anything, other than being the network provider. It would seem that Apple didn’t want to give Verizon the power to selectively remove features from the phone. So in this respect, I think Apple is doing something good by pushing the industry in a direction I think it needs to go. Which is to say, I think telcos (like AT&T/Verizon/Sprint) have way too much influence, and that needs to change.

In other news, Happy Canada Day!
