Free MySQL Containers from Media Temple
2 CommentsBut only if you were a beta tester, or submitted a beta application. Otherwise, an entry level MySQL container starts at $20 / month for a container with 128MB RAM, and goes up to $150 / month for a container with 512MB RAM. Fortunately, I had previously submitted a beta application, and so was able to get a free MySQL container by just submitting a request to Media Temple’s support
The MySQL container is an interesting concept, instead of a single database server hosting lots of database instances… you get a virtual dedicated server just for your MySQL database. Combined with their GridServers setup, and it makes for a pretty compelling low cost web hosting setup. Not quite as cheap as something like Dreamhost, but then, you’re not quite paying for the same type and quality of service.
As far as I can tell, there hasn’t been any noticable difference in the site’s performace (that is, it’s still pretty fast loading), but hopefully this will help reduce and bring down my GPU usage back to a reasonable level.

I find the MySQL containers to be interesting. I’m not sure what I would do with a grid server and a $150 month Mysql container. I maybe get 50000 hits per month on my main website and that uses up more than half of the GPUs. In order to use the capabilities of that container I would need probably need to scale to 5 times this, and at this point I would be paying $500-600 a month for a site that could realistically be hosted on a couple of deds for $200-250 per month.
I guess you get additional reliability with traffic spikes, but for most db driven sites, this would be handled with good cacheing.

Yeah, I think the low end MySQL container makes a lot of sense, especially if you just want a nice reliable database server for a pretty low price point. It seems to compliment their front end web servers quite nicely.
But yeah… for the $150, it seems like I would be much better off with some dedicated servers, as you mentioned. I could get three virtual dedicated servers from Media Temple for that price.
