Recommendation for Guitars?
7 CommentsNumber of strings I have broken: 4. Times those strings were broken while playing in front of an people: 3. Date of most recent broken string: Today, at church.
Sigh… I need to get better strings. I broke the D string on the first song I was playing, so yeah, that was awkward. Had to lead a song acapella, which is not really something I’m comfortable with. But I did have a keyboard backup, so it wasn’t all lost. And I just recently dented my guitar, so it looks like I need to get a new guitar. Or at least get strings that are not useless. I guess it’s about time anyways, since the guitar I have right now is literally the cheapest I could find. Anybody got any recommendations for a nice guitar? Or strings?
Happy mothers day, mom
I leave for VanBC (again) in less than a week. Raw salmon and tuna, here I come. Mmmmmm…..

All my friends use Elixir. They’re obsessed. I found you a couple days ago searching for WP stuff. I’m glad I did. Good luck in your strings search. Peace.
Reduce your stress! Seriously; our best guitar player @ church was breaking a string every service for a while.
He found that he was playing WAY too hard due to several stressful factors: pressure to go a good job, a sound system that was sub-par, and monitors that were NOT monitors.
All three of those changed for the better, and he hasn’t broken a string in over 2 YEARS.
Maybe not really what you wanted to hear, but buying a new axe is only going to be part of the solution. Food for thought!
I’m a big, big fan of the Gibson J-200, Joe. A beautiful guitar. My pride and joy is the Huss and Dalton Model CM though. And I always use Gibson Medium Strings.
and i didn’t close my anchor tag. sheesh.
Yo bud, question for ya: Where is the string breaking? If it’s breaking by the bridge, it could be that it’s b/c the bridge is too sharp and actually “cutting” the strings. Quick way to fix it is to take some very fine sandpaper and try and smooth it out, but not too much to dull out the sound…
hope that helps!
thanks for the suggestions
Yeah, the string broke near the front… I think it was a light string, but now I’m not sure cuz all my strings are mixed up, lights and mediums. I think I will at least go get some elixirs and try that out.
I would also ask the question what kind of guitar you have. Some guitars have a thing for breaking strings. I had a Maton EM225C that i had when playing in church which was prone to breaking strings… espectially the G. After consulting many knowledgable guitar peoples (including Maton) i decided to change my bridge. They said that my model imparticular had a thing for breaking the G string. I think i changed to one made out of bone which wasnt as likely to leave indents from the strings. It removed the issue of string breakage but the guy who installed it did a poor job of setting the action (thats another issue altogether). But more to the point, it can be the model of guitar that makes it more prone to breakage, or yes it can be from strumming too hard.
As for string selection, when i had that maton, i tried many different brands, elixirs included. I found for my guitar that the elixirs werent any better for breakage (only for retaining quality of sound from string). I got settled with light mediums, and on the occasion when i could afford elixirs i got them.
I do empathise with breaking string during a service! I went through a phase with that maton of breaking at least a string every two sundays. *sigh.. i hope that helps.
