And the Oscar goes to…
2 CommentsCrash? The only movies I saw that were nominated were King Kong, War of the Worlds and Narnia. They really seemed to push the “theater going” experience as the way of properly seeing a movie. Well ok, maybe I’d go to the movie theaters more often if the tickets weren’t so expensive, it doesn’t cost $7.50 for a popcorn and coke soda pop, if theaters weren’t filled with obnoxious people who don’t turn off cell phones or who bring their babies into the theater, and most of all, if there were actually good movies worth watching. No kidding, the average take for the 5 best picture nominees ($47 mil) is way less then that of a documentary about pengiuns ($77 mil). And yeah, reading about someone watching the Oscars is about as exciting as watching the Oscars (via)… so I’ll stop now
So I hear Delirious is coming to McLean Bible in April. Woot! But when I go to McLean Bible’s Calendar of Events page to try and look up some more info on how to get tickets, the calendar page doesnt load at all. Or rather, it takes an obnoxiously long time to load. And on my Powerbook G4, I get an error message saying that there’s some script on the page that’s taking too long to finish executing. There’s so many things wrong with the way this calendar was implemented. Ugh. What is the script doing that’s taking so long to load? Bubble sorting all the events?? On my pretty fast work computer, there’s no reason a calendar should take up 100% of my CPU for up to 20 seconds just to load event data.
Boo to the web developers who thought it was a good idea to embed mission critical data (events) into a third party plugin (Flash) with poor usability (the first event in the list on the left is for Sept 2005, wtf), without using efficient algorithms to load data, and most importantly of all, without the proper backwards compatibility testing. There should be some sort of recourse available for me if I don’t have Flash installed, or if my computer isn’t fast enough to load the applet (like my G4). Flash is not always evil, but its potential for evil is definately up there. Especially when a simple table will be more than enough1. It’s like the <BLINK> tag of the 90’s all over again. If you ever find me creating a web site where the primary means of delivering information relies on a client side third party plugin, then please for the good of the Internet, just come over and hit me over the head with a clue stick. I could go on, but like I said before, I’ll just stop now
PS, if you wanna go to the Delirious? concert, drop me a line!
1 Third hit when I Googled for “calendar of events church“.

I’m with you. The whole movie experience is way too expensive. But I guess it has to be to pay all those actors and actresses.
I understand your theater going trials and tribulations. To put into perspective how good the NA movie going experience is, here in China, not only do people have their cell phones freely ring, they feel that it’s not a problem either to have an actual conversation at normal speaking levels. Don’t get me started on how talking w/ friends while the reel is rolling is also permitted…
