The Winter Olympics 2006

Here’s hoping Team Canada strikes double gold again with a repeat performance of the 2002 games. Both our Men’s and Women’s team won gold over Team USA. It was great. I remember much rejoicing throughout all of Canada when the men’s gold medal game was finally finished. That game was probably repeated on TV a hundred times for the next 4 weeks. Yeah, we love our hockey :)

Out on the streets, an impromptu parade of honking vehicles, filled or surrounded by flag-waving celebrants, clogged traffic, but nobody seemed to mind. Tens of thousands of people had gathered within an hour after the final whistle. It was much the same across the country. From Newfoundland to British Columbia, from southern Ontario to northern Yukon, revelers counted down the last 30 seconds and then leaped and screamed for joy wherever they watched. - Sports Illustrated

As someone who does HTML and stuff, does anybody else think the web site for Torino 2006 looks ordinary and uninspiring? For an event that’s supposed to capture the entire world’s imagination, the web site for it looks like it was cloned from some cookie cutter template. Not to say that it’s bad, but just very meh. And it looks like it was created with old school table tags. Double meh. At least NBC and CBC’s web site looks pretty reasonable.

Hate to be contrary, but I like the Torino website. I really don’t do much HTML myself, just enough to get by on my blog, so there are probably things you see that I’m missing.
For me, the layout is nice and simple and I find it easy to navigate to the information. Also, they’re dealing with a worldwide audience and might be reluctant to build pages that take a long time to load.
    As for hockey, I’m saying men’s — Canada, women’s hockey — USA.

I think you’re right. It looks just too ordinary for such a huge event.

But: I think you have to do a really good job if you want a website to be well designed …or visually interesting and easy to navigate even with a awful lot of content.

I can’t exactly recall how I found your Blog in the first place, but it’s really great! Please keep on writing!

Regrettably, I haven’t been watching the 2006 games as closely as I could have been this week.

As for the official Torino website, it’s a little multi-coloured for my taste. The pink-mauve-orange-yellow-gold scheme is too distracting for me.
