West Virginia Mining Accident
2 CommentsWhile waiting for my flight out of VanBC 2 nights ago, the TV in the airport had CNN on, and they were covering the big mining accident that happened in West Virginia. What I find interesting was that they were covering this story literally non-stop, repeating the same basic information over and over again, interviewing this and that person, coming up with theories on what could work and what couldn’t. I watched a bit of TV at home before I left, and they were covering the accident. A couple hours later, at the airport, they were still covering the accident. I don’t mean this with any disrespect, because it is a horrible tragedy, but it just seems like the news networks these days latch onto anything that “sells” and whatever makes for interesting soundbites. I guess it was probably a slow news day, because apparently nothing else noteworthy was really worth reporting.
Anyways, there’s another post about this incident I read online, which I agree with, where the author says:
… when I read this story, the question I kept asking myself is, “why do they thank the Lord for a ‘miracle,’ and then blame the rescuers when the miracle is ‘taken away?’” If you believe the Lord granted the miracle, then doesn’t it stand to reason that he also took it away? If you believe the rescuers took it away, then should you have been praising them, and not the Lord, for giving it to you in the first place?
I sometimes find myself doing the same thing (albeit with less traumatic circumstances), where I thank God for the blessings in life, but then easily blame others for my misfortunes. Everything comes from our God, for better or for worse, and even though it may seem like a for worse, it actually is a for better. I have no idea how God will use this tragedy, and I’m not going to try to explain it, but I know it is in his will and ultimately for his glory.
PS: I wonder how long the Christmas lights are going to stay up….

hey!! yeah it was really good meeting up with you for kbbq and our ‘adventurous’ hike through the woods! I’ll post up the pics sometime and send you the link… still have some more I have to look through
I find myself doing that too sometimes. Forgetting that God blesses you, but can also take it away and regardless, He is still sovereign so why do we question what He does? It makes me think of this Tree63 song (”Blessed Be Your Name”):
Blessed be your name, on the road marked with suffering
Though there’s pain in the offering
…
You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be your name
